90-year-old woman retires after 74 years in the same store – she never had a day off

By the time we reach retirement age, most of us can look forward to years of well-earned rest following a long and arduous career.

Melba Mebane, 90, recently retired from her retail job at the department store where she worked.

Well, 74 years is undoubtedly among the rare people who deserve a break as much as anyone else.

“Even with the changing times, her values and everything remain the same from where she started to where we are today.”

Melba was always a positive force at work. She always arrived each day with a grin on her face and a strong work ethic.

She never missed a shift or called in sick during her 74-year career as a worker.

“Melba sets the tone for every expectation, every customer service quality we look for in a luxury experience,” added store manager Saenz.

In the meantime, Melba’s son, Terry Mebane, said, “She’s a grinder. The store opens at 10, so she got there between 9 and 9:15.”

Furthermore, Melba often took shorter lunch breaks. Terry claimed she did this because she knew people often took their lunch break to go to the mall to buy what they were going to buy.

Throughout her 70s and 80s, Melba worked 40 hours a week.

“I loved everybody there, and I loved going to work,” Melba said.

In a retirement celebration held by Dillar’s, Melba received a plaque in the shape of a “Beyond Excellence” award.
